Atari is developing an Asteroids multiplayer survival game called Asteroids: Outposts. The PC game is a re-imaging of the 1979 arcade classic.
The arcade Asteroids was a class shooter. The new game incorporate the idea of space mining asteroids, which has recently gone from science fiction to reality as companies are emerging with plans to mine asteroids and NASA has hatched a plan to capture an asteroids in space.
The game is being developed by Salty Games. Players find themselves working on a massive asteroid. They have to explore the asteroid and collect resources while they battle or form alliances with other players. Showers of smaller asteroids represent both a source of wealth and a danger in the game.
Atari CEO Fred Chesnais says in a statement, "Asteroids is one of the most iconic titles in Atari's portfolio of more than 200 games and franchises, and we're looking forward to ushering the game into today's digital gaming era. We're paying homage to the original Asteroids by incorporating classic features such as asteroid blasting capabilities, while introducing a completely new premise and gameplay. Asteroids: Outpost will appeal to both fans of the classic Asteroids as well as enthusiasts of immersive survival games and expansive MMOs."
The game has a website at asteroidsoutpost.com.
