Spore Movie in the Works
Posted on October 14, 2009
Variety reports that 20th Century Fox and Electronic Arts have partnered to develop a movie based on Spore. Chris Wedge (Ice Age) is slated to direct Spore. It will be an animated film.
The film is to be written by Greg Erb and Jason Oremland. They wrote The Princess and the Frog and The Return of King Doug.
Wedge tells Variety, "I'm always looking for unique worlds to go to in animation. From every perspective -- visually, thematically and comedically -- the world of 'Spore' provides the potential to put something truly original on the screen."
Variety says Spore has sold 3.2 million units and it is has an awareness beyond that number. The script is going to have to be really good for this to work.
Update 4-26-16: So whatever happened to this movie?
According to an entry on SporeWiki many became skeptical the film was ever going to be released and most believed the project was canceled in 2010. Given that it is 2016 now and there is still no film that is probably what happened. Unless EA decides to develop a new game version of Spore then it is very unlikely a Spore movie is going to happen.
